Since when the power supply is damaged or stops working, we have to think about it, or we have no computer period. The only solution is a power supply replacement. There is indeed the presence of a lot of computer power supplies available in computer shops, so in this respect finding one should not be difficult. The replacement of the power supply with a new unit should also be easy. The hard part is selecting the power supply that your computer needs. There are different kinds of power supplies and each has different specs. For your computer to work properly, it must be equipped with the right one. Till this it is okay. But if anyone or even you by mere accident cause a small amount current to flow through your or any other one's body, the concerned person may be highly damaged and even has to face death. Therefore when there is the need of any power supply repair there is a need to be alert. Therefore, there are two basic things to consider whenever you are buying a new power supply for your computer -- power requirements and the power supply's form factor. It has been found by and large, that the power supplies of the modern age. Modern power supplies have power outputs that range from 200 watts to 500 watts. Now it may happen you are tired and weak and are no longer interested to repair any electronic equipment, refrain from working at once. Or else it may lead to or end up causing more problems for the equipment by replacing a wrong component. Take a break and come back to tackle the problem when you are fresh again. The next essential step is to select and use original part numbers at the time of replacement when dealing with components in the critical section such as the fuse area. Now if the fuse rating happens to be 3 ampere, there is the greater need of replacement with the same value which is 3 ampere. Well, at several occasions slightly higher ampere such as 3.15 ampere may be acceptable. But it is not practicable to use a 10 or 15 ampere for replacements. Why? In some severed cases, the blown capacitor may burn the power supply as well, and there are good old examples regarding this. Now, if you are for the first time in a mood of repairing this type of power supply it is better to remove the switch mode power transformer. This imperative step can be followed by testing every single component in the primary section, before your continuation to check the secondary section. Testing the switch mode power supply primary winding with a dick smith fly back tester showed green bar which indicated good winding. Now, was there that we left? Definitely there was something! What we left here were the
secondary diode and filter capacitor. Upon checking them with analog meter
and ESR meter, found all of them to be good condition. Other area like
main board and inverter board also looked in a good condition (Power failure
rarely affecting these two circuits). Now we have confirmed that only
five components found to be faulty. One by one the components were replaced
(except one fuse) and just before you switch on the power supply, make
sure you connect a 100 watt light bulb across the live ac line-refer to
the photo at my website. Once it is done you can then proceed to switch
on the LCD monitor to look at the brightness of the bulb. Now if it happens
to be very bright, without any reason it can be said, that this is the
ample proof of the presence of short circuit, in whatever level, somewhere
in the power section. If it appears to be dim or totally goes off, it
is possible for you to place your red probe to the secondary side to check
if any dc present at their respective line. But with the presence of the
DC voltages at the output, it is obligatory for you to switch off the
power, discharge the filter capacitor (for safety purposes), remove the
light bulb and connect back the new fuse to its original location. This
makes you self-reliant and also boosts your confidence with the conviction
that the LCD power supply won't blow once you switch it on. |
